Phone-sick at Camp

“Sixth graders who spent just five days at a tech-free sleepaway camp developed greater understanding of real-world interpersonal communication cues, including a better ability to read facial expressions, make eye contact, and interpret tone of voice and other prompts, such as posture and keeping an appropriate spatial distance with others.”

-Jill Werman Harris, New York Times. “Phone-sick at Camp.”

At North Star,  We believe there is a huge value in unplugging for the summer. We don’t allow phones or electronics because it allows our campers to communicate and form friendships in a natural environment. Being away from their phones gives the campers an important sense of independence that leads to growth. They are able to learn for themselves instead of relying on their parents to answer their questions and concerns.
