It plays out as part scavenger hunt and part spy movie, and it asks a cabin to figure things out together in the dark, which is the sort of teamwork these nights are built to create.
Glickspionage and the Naming of the Ski Dock
This year’s edition carried a theme the whole camp could get behind. It was called Glickspionage, built around Glick’s 20th summer at North Star. The game opened with a skit introducing the mission, and one of the biggest surprises of the night came when Glick’s dad appeared as part of it, catching both Glick and the campers completely off guard. The skit had fun with Glick’s love of the Fighting Illini and the Dave Matthews Band, and it poked plenty of fun along the way.
Throughout the evening, cabins earned pieces of a large puzzle by completing challenges around camp. Once they had assembled every piece, the picture came together as an image of Glick, and the final clues on the back of the puzzle led them to the evening’s conclusion. There is a specific North Star tradition behind all of this. When a staff member reaches a 20th summer, the camp recognizes that milestone by naming a place at camp in his honor. Glick celebrated his Big Ten in 2004, and 22 years later he reached his 20th summer. Last night the campers learned that the Ski Dock will now bear his name, recognizing two decades of dedication to North Star and to generations of campers.
The Green-White Egg Marathon and Boil Water Boil
The morning after a late night calls for a slower start, so the day began with Lazy Day and a chance for everyone to sleep in. After breakfast, the afternoon turned to the Green-White Egg Marathon, the final major event in a competition that runs the length of the summer at this Wisconsin overnight camp. The Egg Marathon is a relay race that stretches across nearly every corner of camp, with teams rotating through dozens of stations that mix athletic competitions, waterfront events, outdoor skills, and camp challenges. The twist is the egg, because each team has to keep a raw egg intact for the entire race, and if it breaks they have to head back for a replacement before they can keep going.
As it does every year, the race finished with Boil Water Boil. Two campers from each team work together to build a fire and bring a can of water to a continuous rolling boil, and the whole afternoon can come down to that final push. Green held a narrow lead through much of the day, and Alex F. and Joey N. sealed the victory by winning the final event.
Camper-Counselor Hunt, Casino Night, and What Comes Next
The Green-White traditions did not stop there. The afternoon before, camp held its annual Camper-Counselor Hunt, another Green-White tradition in which counselors hide throughout camp while campers search every building, trail, and hiding place they can think of. Somehow I survived another year, although the campers came closer to finding me than they ever have.
In the evening, Casino Night gave campers the chance to play cards, bingo, and a variety of casino-style games while spending time with friends. This stretch of the summer is packed with special events, and there is still more on the schedule. Tomorrow is Camper-Counselor Switch Day, when our older campers step into the counselors’ shoes for the day, helping teach activities and work with the younger boys. It tends to be one of the most enjoyable days of the whole summer.
