Staff Frequently Asked Questions

Temperatures are typically in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (21-29 Celsius) during the day and cooler (60s) at night (high teens Celsius).

If you are a cabin counselor, you’ll live in a cabin with your 2-3 co-counselors and approximately 8-12 campers. Counselor beds are in separate “counselor quarters” in the cabin. Out-of-cabin staff members will reside in shared staff housing.

The food is fantastic! Our meals are served family style. There is a hot entree for every meal, with other option choices at most meals such as a cereal bar (breakfast), salad bar (lunch / dinner), and sunbutter and jelly station (we are a nut-free kitchen). In the evenings after lights out, we very frequently serve a staff snack in our Lodge. You definitely will eat well at camp!

Yes! It is important that our staff stay energized throughout the summer, so all staff members receive one full day (8 AM – 12:45 AM) and one evening off (5 PM – 12:45 AM) per week. Additionally, there are often periods off during the day.

Many staff members choose to leave camp on their time off and explore the northwoods of Wisconsin and the surrounding areas. The closest town is Hayward, WI. If you’re looking to venture a little further, our staff enjoy going to Duluth, MN to hang out at the beach on Lake Superior and explore the eclectic stores and restaurants in town. There are also amazing hiking spots and parks in the area to explore. Of course, you don’t have to leave camp – you can relax at camp and hang out in the staff lounge, catching up with friends and family at home.

Yes. Working at camp can be a demanding job, so we want to ensure our staff get a sufficient amount of sleep each day. All staff members must be back in camp at 12:45 am (if on a day / night off) and all staff must be in their cabins by 1:00 am.

All of our staff will be paid in one lump sum at the end of their contract. If you would like to withdraw money from your earned pay prior during the summer, we can give you a check to cash in town.

We have a laundry facility at camp, so you can either send your laundry in during your cabin’s assigned time and our housekeeping staff will wash, dry and fold your laundry or you can do your own laundry during free times. The laundry is free of charge.

North Star Camp has a strict substance-free policy. Drugs are never permitted on campgrounds and are not condoned outside of camp. If you are of legal age (21+), alcohol may be consumed outside of camp on time off. However, you will be expected to be ready to work the following morning, so excessive drinking is not permitted. Staff found in violation of this policy may be terminated.

Since we’re in a remote area of Wisconsin, some cell companies don’t have great service at camp. However, we do have WiFi near our Lodge, program office and other areas around camp. When you are on time off or periods off, you may use your phones and computers to keep in touch with people back home or do schoolwork. However, phones and computers are not allowed in the cabins, so you’ll need to keep your technology locked up in the staff lockers in the Lodge.
