The backbone of every camp is its staff. We have a camper to staff ratio of 3-to-1, with at least three counselors in every cabin.
We focus a significant effort to make sure that we’re hiring the best staff possible. We entrust our staff with real responsibility so we make sure that every staff member has the ability and desire to work with kids as well as the skills to teach one of our activities. Many of our counselors are former campers. We are proud of our tremendous Counselor-in-Training program, which has groomed many staff members.
We also make sure that we are bringing in quality new staff that bring with them new ideas and experiences. We travel to camp fairs and college campuses to find great counselor candidates. To provide a unique cultural experience for our campers, we utilize international staff agencies to find counselors from countries like Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.
To determine if they meet the core competencies we have identified for successful counselors, each staff member goes through an extensive interview process. We also conduct background checks to ensure that the candidates we hire have clean records are appropriate to work with our campers. Our staff spends a week at North Star prior to the arrival of the campers for our pre-camp orientation.
