Wilderness Trips

Camp provides kids the opportunity to be true Voyageurs! North Star’s location in Northwestern Wisconsin gives us access to some of the best canoeing and hiking areas in the Upper Midwest and Canada and we take advantage of them.

Every camper at North Star will take at least one wilderness camping trip during the summer. They will take their canoeing or hiking trip with their cabin group, meaning they go out with the cabin mates and counselors who they spend the summer with. For our younger campers this means having the security and comfort of sharing the trip with friends and counselors. Our trips serve as a major group development experience. For our oldest campers, this means going on trips year after year with their same group of friends, leading to memories that last a lifetime.

Our trip program is also progressive. Campers go on age appropriate trips that get more challenging as they get older where each trip builds off the one before it. For campers who want the opportunity, we provide additional sign-up trips. These include climbing, horseback riding, white water and other wilderness trips.

Safety is of the utmost concern. In addition to the three cabin counselors that help staff the trip, one of our Trip Leaders takes charge of the trip. Our Trip Leaders are individuals with significant camping experience and a desire to work with kids. Before the summer, each of our trip leaders are put through two certification courses. The Wilderness First Responder Course (WFR) is an eight day intensive first aid course that trains them to deal with back country emergency situations. All trip leaders are also put through life guard training.
