Health & Safety At north star Camp for boys
Our absolute highest priority each summer is the health and safety of our campers and staff.
We are proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association. The American Camp Association partners with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving organizations to develop health, safety, and risk management standards based on best practices for camps to adhere to around the country. North Star Camp participates in a thorough accreditation process to ensure our camp operations, facilities, program quality, hiring practices and staff training, risk management, and emergency procedures and policies are best in class.
North Star Camp has a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan (EAP) to guide us through any emergency that may occur throughout the summer. The EAP is reviewed annually by North Star’s directors and there are multiple sessions throughout staff training to help familiarize our entire summer staff on emergency protocols, risk management, and more. Specifically, some of the many precautions we take throughout the summer include but are not limited to:
- North Star Directors, Leadership Team members, and health center staff carry walkie talkies at all times to communicate in case of an emergency
- North Star Directors monitor weather forecasts frequently throughout the day, receive local weather alerts via text, and will make adjustments to the program as needed to keep campers and staff safe
- Emergency procedures are shared with campers and staff after dinner on the first night of the camp session
- Fire extinguishers and first aid kits are spread out around camp located in or near common living areas or program areas
- An AED is located in the health center and backboards are located in the health center and at Swim Point
- All automobiles, boats, or any vehicle that transports campers and staff are inspected by a third party before camp begins
North Star Camp Health Center
We have a newly renovated, air-conditioned health center that is staffed by Registered Nurses and health aides who are available 24/7. Each summer, we have three on-site Registered Nurses and three health aides. Our fantastic health center team provides the best care and support for the physical and emotional well-being of our campers and staff. We also partner with pediatricians for virtual visits if needed and work closely with the medical team at Hayward Memorial Hospital, which is 15 minutes from camp.
Our health center team will provide communication and updates for parents if their camper stays overnight in the health center or requires outside medical care.
