What happens when I first get to camp?

At approximately 4:22 pm, the buses will roll into camp, and our staff will give you a very energetic North Star Camp welcome as you get off the bus. The whole camp will gather around the flagpole, and Andy will greet everyone, point out where some important buildings are around camp, and then announce cabin assignments! Once your name and cabin are announced, an incredible summer of fun will officially begin!!
Who will be in my cabin, and will there be other new campers?

You will be in a cabin with other kids from your same grade-level along with 3-4 of our awesome counselors. We try our best to have a mix of new campers and returning campers in each cabin. During the first day of camp, you’ll have a tour of camp, so you know where everything is. Our goal by the end of the first night is that every camper will have made a new friend.
Are there showers and/or bathrooms in the cabin?

What happens when it rains?

Well, “it never rains at North Star Camp” is something you may hear throughout the summer. In the event it does rain though, we will ring a bell to signify a Rainy Day program. Depending on how long the rain is going to last, it may be extended rest hour in the cabins, or it could be organized games and activities at our indoor facilities around camp (the Lodge, Arts & Crafts, Mike Hall, or our fantastic VICtory Fieldhouse which contains a full-size basketball court, ping pong, foosball, and pool tables). Even if it rains, the fun will continue that’s for sure!
What if I get homesick?

The first thing to know is that missing home is 100% normal. You may miss your parents, siblings, pets, friends, the comforts of your home — and that’s totally okay. You will have a great support system at camp to help you overcome your homesickness. Your counselors and cabinmates will help you feel better, and we’ll be sure to keep you busy having so much fun at camp that those feelings will start to go away quickly.
What do I do when I have a problem at camp?

The great thing about camp is that there are so many people who care about you and want to help you solve whatever issue you’re dealing with. While we can guarantee camp will be fun, when you live with others and are on your own for the first time, there are some problems that can arise. That’s totally normal and we’re here to help. If you have a problem at a project, you can talk to your counselor, the activity instructor, or our Program Director. If you are not feeling well or have an injury, you can talk to our nurse in the health center. We have health checks after breakfast, lunch, and evening programs for non-emergency situations. If you are having a problem with a cabin mate or something else at camp, please be sure to tell a counselor, Village Director, or Camp Director. We want everyone to have a fantastic summer at camp. Our staff can only help you if you share what’s bothering you.

What Is The Food Like?

The food is fantastic! Seriously. Each meal will have a main course and sides and are always things that kids love. If you don’t feel like eating the main meal option, we also have a cereal bar at breakfast and a salad bar at lunch and dinner. Sunbutter and Jelly is also available, and we have options for vegetarians and other special diets at every meal too.
What happens if I take medicine or am allergic to something?

Our excellent health center staff will take care of you. Medicine is dispensed during meals and before bedtime. If you have allergies, our kitchen and health staff will be aware of the allergies and make sure that you are receiving the care you need in the event of an allergic reaction.
How do I communicate with my parents? Will I be able to call home?

We have a required letter writing day twice a week, but feel free to write letters home whenever you want. Your friends and family will love hearing how much fun you’re having at camp! However, we do not allow parents to call and talk to campers as it disrupts the fun they are having, and can oftentimes create feelings of homesickness.

How long has camp been around?

North Star Camp for Boys was founded in 1945 by Lou and Renee Rosenblum. Lou and Renee owned and directed the camp until 1979, when Robert and Sue Lebby purchased the camp. The Lebby’s ran the camp until 2011 when North Star Camp’s current owner and director, Andy Shlensky, purchased the camp. Andy started as a camper in 1997, and has spent over 20 summers of his life at North Star Camp for Boys.
