Unplug. Reconnect. Let Kids Be Kids.

A summer of real adventures, growth, and new friendships – Completely screen-free!

At North Star Camp for Boys, we believe in the power of unplugging. Our tech-free summer camp experience gives kids the rare opportunity to disconnect from devices and reconnect with what really matters – nature, friendship and self-discovery. Campers are not permitted to bring any electronics that connect to the internet or anything to camp that has a screen (besides sunscreen).

In 2024, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt released a book called “The Anxious Generation.” In it, he explores the disappearance of “play-based childhood” which coincided with the invention of the smartphone & the rise in popularity of social media. Since the 2010s, rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide have risen sharply amongst adolescents. Social media and smartphones have interfered with social and neurological development in children, resulting in increased sleep deprivation, addiction, loneliness, social comparison, and expectations of instant gratification.

By being unplugged from technology, our campers are able to be their true, authentic selves and be fully present every day. The lifelong social and emotional skills that campers develop at North Star Camp will help them navigate real-world challenges as they get older.

Here’s why a fully unplugged summer camp experience makes such a big impact on young, growing kids:

1. Stronger Social Skills

Without screens, campers build real-life communication and social skills through shared experiences and face-to-face interactions. Our screen-free summer camp environment helps campers develop lifelong friendships and skills like teamwork, active listening, conflict resolution, and empathy through communal living and daily outdoor play.

2. Improved Mental Health

Constant notifications and screen time can contribute to anxiety and other mental health issues. At North Star Camp, kids have the space to breathe, reflect, and reset for four or eight weeks — leading to better sleep, reduced stress, and improved mood.

3. Boosted Creativity and Imagination

Without screens providing constant stimulation, campers have the opportunity to get creative. Whether it’s storytelling around a campfire, making arts & crafts projects, or inventing their own games with cabinmates, kids thrive when given the space to let their imaginations run wild.

4. More Movement and Outdoor Play

Screen time often means sitting still. North Star Camp campers spend their days outside, following a jam-packed daily schedule that keeps kids moving with activities like swimming, waterskiing, climbing, mountain biking, and team sports—all while soaking in fresh air and sunshine.

5. Deeper Connection with Nature

When kids put down their devices, they tune in to the world around them. At our tech-free summer camp, every camper goes on a wilderness camping trip with the cabinmates, counselors and a wilderness trip leader. Whether they are canoeing on the Flambeau River or hiking the Superior Hiking Trail, campers are able to be one with the nature of the Northwoods of Wisconsin, developing a sense of wonder and respect for the natural world.

6. Increased Independence and Confidence

Without digital help at their fingertips, campers are required to solve problems, try new things, and make decisions for themselves. By being more independent, campers learn how to be resilient and persevere, building confidence as they navigate daily challenges. Our empathetic staff are there to help provide additional guidance, encouragement, and counsel.

7. Enhanced Focus and Attention Span

By eliminating screen distractions, kids rediscover how to stay present and engaged. Our unplugged summer camp helps children build focus, mindfulness, and patience—all essential life skills.

8. A True Sense of Community

At North Star Camp, every camper is part of something special. Shared meals, campfires, and cabin life create a strong sense of belonging and teamwork that’s hard to replicate in a screen-heavy world. Campers are able to live in the moment and will leave North Star with deep, long-lasting friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
