Cruiser Day Fun
We often get asked what we do on the weekends at camp, and people are often thrown back when they hear that Tuesday is our weekend! Tuesdays, known here as Cruiser Days, offer a break from our regular programming and allow campers to enjoy cabin-based activities on a more relaxed schedule. Today was a wonderful first Cruiser Day!
Cruiser Days begin with some time to sleep in and a leisurely breakfast of fresh donuts, fruit, and a variety of cereals served by Dan and Beth in a come-as-you-are morning picnic. Following the meal, each cabin embarks on an extensive cabin cleanup, doing a deep clean and mop of their cabins. Once the chores are complete, it’s time to dive into the activities planned for the day.
Before Cruiser Day, each cabin works together to plan a variety of activities for their Cruiser Day, and then our wonderful Special Programs Director Kim McCormack creates a custom schedule for each cabin to follow. These options span from the familiar camp favorites like tubing, arts and crafts, and Musky Fun (where they can canoe for candy and snacks) to inventive hijinks and whimsical adventures like slip-and-slide bowling and camp-wide treasure hunts.
Our Junior Village Campers had their Village Cruiser Day today, where all of the cabins go together on an excursion. Today, they went to a lumberjack competition in Hayward at the same venue where they host the local Lumberjack World Championships every year. The campers had a blast watching everything from pole climbing, log rolling, and speed tree-chopping. Afterwards, our J-Village counselors took the campers to a fun afternoon of mini-golf, followed by cabin cookouts at the beach and the sunset.
Today also marked the warm welcome home for cabins S-2 and S-1 who just returned from the Superior Hiking Trail, a five-day, four-night hiking trip!
Every Cruiser Day ends with cabin cookouts––each cabin gathers at their own campfire site to prepare a delectable campfire dinner. Tonight was a North Star classic: Tin Foil Surprise. This delight involves a potpourri of potatoes, carrots, onions, ground beef, and cheese wrapped in tinfoil. For dessert, everyone’s favorite: S’mores.
