The Rhythm of a North Star Day
Today marked the beginning of our regular schedule. After a few days of orientation and connection-building, we stepped into the rhythm of daily camp life. There was great excitement around the flagpole as the kids as the kids prepared to see their first schedules.
Our program works hard to strike the balance between structure and choice. Our instructional periods, Periods 1, 2, and 3, are the foundation of each day. This is when campers dive into the activities that they have chosen for the week, whether they’re building on skills they’ve practiced for years or trying something brand new. With more than 80 activities to choose from, each camper receives six of their top ten ranked choices in a rotating three-day schedule. Each day builds on the last, progress is visible, and mastery becomes possible. And if a camper tries something new, but doesn’t love it, a fresh schedule is always just three days away.

Our Objective Based Programming adds a meaningful layer to every activity. Whether it’s hitting a bullseye in archery, summiting the climbing wall, or learning to tack while sailing, these milestones help campers understand that growth isn’t accidental, but rather a product of effort and commitment. When they see their own advancement, they gain confidence in themselves and in their ability to try new things.

One of our fourth year campers wanted to get back out to fishing after two summers of not catching a fish. Today, he got back out there and caught a bass on his first outing of the summer. Alongside him was a 5th year Senior Village camper who was proud to be helping other kids ready their rods and reels and even helped dock the boat. Every camper has the ability to push themself to their own new heights. And when they do, we celebrate them like crazy.

Fifth period is called Organized Free. The boys get to pick any activity they like for just that period. Whether it’s hanging out at swim point, zip-lining from the climbing wall, playing catch, or just relaxing and playing cards with friends in one of our designated hangout areas, the choice is completely theirs! This gives the boys a greater sense of freedom as well as the ability to travel that period with their friends from any cabin or even different age groups.
Tonight’s evening program was the Staff Talent Show, whe re our incredible counselors and staff members took the stage to share their unique talents. There were musical performances both serious and satirical, attempts at comedy, and some new takes on some classic skits. There were animal appearances with Robyn’s family rabbit making a magical appearance and Boomer and Smudge McCormack putting on their tricks. Seeing how engaged the campers were, Dan pointed out that it wasn’t because of the talent, but rather that the campers have already developed meaningful connections with the staff.
Our Pine Manor campers left this morning for their 10-day Canadian adventure, kicking off our Wilderness Trips program. S-1, S-2 & S-3 all leave on their trips tomorrow.
