The course is being run by Global EMS Solutions and their instructors, utilizing Wilderness Medical Associates International’s (WMAI) curriculum. The WFR course is a tremendous learning experience, with lots of hands-on simulations and drills. Please come prepared and well rested. Expect to focus the entirety of your time on the course and studying materials provided by Global EMS and WMAI and their instructors dictate the content of the course and make all final evaluations. We have no input on the curriculum and grading/testing decisions are made entirely by Global EMS and WMAI.
- Course 1, Seven Day Course: Tuesday, May 23rd – Monday, May 29th, 2023
- Course 2, Five Day Course: Wednesday, May 31 – Sunday, May 4th, 2023
Both courses will require some pre-course work. The five day course pre-course work is more intensive and will require more time to complete. We expect that all participants will have completed the pre-course work ahead of their arrival.
As the host camp, we want to provide you some info and policies that we have during your stay at North Star.
This course includes instruction, materials, lodging and food.
Meals During the Course:
Course 1 begins after breakfast on May 23rd. Participants are encouraged to arrive the afternoon or evening of May 22nd. Dinner will be provided on the 22nd. The course is scheduled to end on May 29th. Ending time will be up to the course instructor. North Star will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner over the duration of the course.
Course 2 begins after breakfast on May 31st. Participants are encouraged to arrive the afternoon or evening of May 30th. Dinner will be provided on the 30th. The course is scheduled to end on June 4th. Ending time will be up to the course instructor. North Star will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner over the duration of the course.
Please provide your intended travel information on your registration so we know when to expect your arrival. If you do not have it at the time of registration, please send it as soon as you have it finalized. If you have dietary needs or allergies, please note them in the provided section of the registration. Please note that North Star may not be able to meet all dietary needs. If this is the case, we will let you know upon receiving your registration.
Lodging at North Star:
All participants will be staying in one of a few cabins for the duration of the course. Cabins will be based on gender. Cabins are not heated, but do have electricity. Cabins do not have toilet and shower facilities, but we have washhouses in close proximity to the cabins. Please bring your own bedding, pillows and towels. If you want to use sheets, twin or cot sized sheets and blankets will work at North Star.
Wifi is available in our main lodge. Cell phone service is spotty at North Star. If you wish to give family members your phone number to reach you while at North Star, they can contact our main office number, which is 715-462- 3254.
Travel to North Star – Driving:
Camp is located about 15 miles away from the town of Hayward, Wisconsin. For GPS purposes, our address is 10970 W Boys Camp Rd., Hayward, WI, 54843.
From Chicago/Milwaukee, take I-94 west to HWY 53 north. Then take HWY 63 north thru the town of Hayward. Take HWY 77 east to Murphy BLVD and take a left. Then take a right on Boys Camp Rd.
From Minneapolis, take I-35 north to HWY 70 east. HWY 70 east to HWY 63 north. Then take HWY 63 north thru the town of Hayward. Take HWY 77 east to Murphy BLVD and take a left. Then take a right on Boys Camp Rd.
Proceed down Boys Camp Rd about a mile and you will drive right into camp. Once you get to camp, drive up North Star Camp Wilderness First Responder to the office. You may see cars parked on your left just after you drive past the North Star Arch, however keep driving up to the main lodge/office. Come up to the office and find someone to help you.
Please plan accordingly and give yourself plenty of time to make the drive to camp.
Travel to North Star – Flying:
North Star will only be providing transportation from Minneapolis International Airport for staff of their camp as well as Road Less Traveled. Staff of other camps needing a ride from the airport should coordinate their travel needs with their camp.
Policies at North Star:
As individuals being trained to lead youth on back country trips, we expect that you will be able to monitor your own behavior during your stay. Use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs at North Star Camp is prohibited. We expect that these items will not be brought onto camp premises. Participants time off is at the discretion of the course instructor. Individuals who leave camp are expected to return sober and showing no signs of alcohol consumption.
We ask that all participants are respectful of others in the course as well as other individuals at North Star. Aggressive, disrespectful behavior is not welcome at camp and individuals who are deemed to be acting inappropriately will be asked to leave.
If you wish to use North Star Camp’s equipment during your stay, please ask a member of our leadership. We will expect that you follow safety procedures.
Please take some time to look over the WMAI equipment list which is provided on our website. There is also a waiver which we will ask you to sign at the course. If you are under 18 years of age at the start of the course, that waiver will need to be signed by a parent or guardian.
